Ayanur is an autodidact who is passionate about street theatre. He has no formal education and no job, however he is determined to make enough money to get his daughter married. He works in the streets of Govinda's Market, stalls selling fruit and vegetables, and does odd-jobs such as repairing the water tanks for local residences.Abhay (Parambrata Chatterjee), Ayanpur's younger son, is a bully who picks on Nandini (Zaira Wasim), because she is beautiful and well educated. Abhay also uses her as a sounding board for his own ideas and opinions and enjoys putting her down and belittling her. He himself is not very bright, but comes across as being brilliant because he has memorized his father's books. His father frequently asks him to read passages from them in order to garner respect from his friends. Initially, Nandini does not want any part of this arrangement but eventually she relents out of necessity.At this point Nandini's education comes to a standstill since Abhay wants her to devote her time to him so that he can obtain the student of the year title. She agrees in order that she may stay at the Ghosh home and continue her education. The film has a parallel story running about the relationship between Abhay and Nandini and their blossoming love for each other.Bishnu (Siddharth Malhotra), the male lead of the film, is the most popular student in his school and also wants to be Student of the Year. Nandini and Bishnu's paths cross when Bishnu goes into a fit of rage after his results show that he has topped the list of students even though he had stopped studying since he expected to come second.
